The advancement of technology had brought us all manner of labour saving devices for use in the home. The kitchen is no exception and the last 20 years has seen an influx of appliances that have made cooking and food preparation a whole lot easier and eliminated some of those nasty little jobs that brought blistered hands to many a tired housewife.

The invention of the motor has been the most significant advancement and has brought us devices such as the blender, food processor, mixer, juicer, electric whisk etc. How did we ever survive before the invention of these appliances? Basically in the past certain tasks would’ve been only by someone with skilled hands whereas the introduction of kitchen appliances has meant anybody who can stick a plug in an electric socket is capable of performing some of the nitty gritty jobs that are involved in creating culinary delights.

The other most obvious creation that introduced even the most kitchen un-savvy characters to the concept of hot food is the toaster. This device is capable of turning fresh bread into tasty toast in a matter of minutes with no effort or vigilance required. The introduction of the toaster into everyday usage has spawned an industry of food products designed specifically for heating in the minimum time and with the minimum amount of effort. Pop tarts, Toaster pockets, Potato Waffles, Potato Cakes, Square Crumpets etc were all created with the purpose of bringing fast food into the home. Add a microwave and a kettle to the ensemble and the average Brit has the capacity for a good home cooked meal in the form of beans on toast and a cup of tea....Magic!
